The English name Mona Lisa comes from an Italian form of polite address meaning “my lady.” The titles associated with the painting also make a pun on Lisa del Giocondo’s married name, with the title suggesting happiness or cheerfulness. The traditional identification of the sitter is Lisa del Giocondo, the wife of Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo.
