The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to physical objects embedded with sensors, processing capabilities, software, and communication technologies that enable them to collect, exchange, and act on data through networks. These objects can include household appliances, vehicles, medical devices, industrial equipment, and infrastructure. Although the name suggests connection to the public Internet, IoT devices only need to be connected to a network and individually addressable. IoT combines electronics, communication, computer science, embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, automation, ubiquitous computing, and machine learning. Its applications range from smart homes and connected healthcare to industrial monitoring, transportation, agriculture, asset tracking, and smart infrastructure. Because connected devices can collect sensitive information and may be vulnerable to cyberattacks, privacy, security, safety, and regulatory concerns are important aspects of IoT development.
