Developmental psychology is the scientific study of how human thinking, emotions, behavior, and relationships change across the lifespan. Although it initially focused on infants and children, the field now examines development from infancy through adolescence, adulthood, aging, and the entire life course. Its major dimensions include physical development, cognitive development, and social-emotional development, covering topics such as motor skills, language, moral reasoning, personality, identity, emotional growth, and social relationships. Developmental psychologists investigate how biological factors, individual characteristics, social contexts, culture, and the environment interact to shape development. Major theories explain development in different ways. Freud emphasized psychosexual stages, Piaget described stages of cognitive development, Kohlberg focused on moral reasoning, and Erikson proposed eight psychosocial stages across the lifespan. Bronfenbrenner highlighted the influence of nested environmental systems, while Vygotsky emphasized culture, social interaction, and the zone of proximal development. Other important perspectives include constructivism, evolutionary developmental psychology, and attachment theory. Ongoing debates address the roles of nature and nurture, developmental stages and continuous change, biological essentialism and neuroplasticity, and individual differences in developmental pathways.
