Quantum mechanics is the fundamental theory used to describe the behavior of matter and light at atomic and subatomic scales, where classical physics is insufficient. Its scope includes molecules, atoms, electrons, photons, and other quantum systems, and its methods extend to fields such as quantum chemistry, quantum biology, quantum information science, quantum technology, and quantum field theory. Classical mechanics can often be recovered as an approximation of quantum mechanics at ordinary macroscopic scales. The purpose of quantum mechanics is to calculate the possible outcomes and probabilities of measurements made on quantum systems. It explains phenomena such as quantized energy levels, wave-particle duality, uncertainty, interference, tunneling, superposition, and entanglement. Rather than usually predicting a single certain result, the theory uses a wave function and the Born rule to determine probability distributions, while the Schrödinger equation describes how a quantum state changes over time. Its predictions have been confirmed experimentally with extremely high accuracy.
