Explainable AI (XAI) is a field focused on enabling humans to understand, evaluate, and oversee the reasoning behind AI-generated predictions and decisions. It addresses the opacity of black-box machine-learning systems by making their outputs, supporting evidence, limitations, and decision processes more transparent. XAI aims to improve user understanding, trust, accountability, safety, fairness, and the ability to challenge or verify automated decisions, even when no legal right to an explanation exists. The scope of XAI includes transparency, interpretability, and explainability across the entire AI lifecycle. It covers explanations of specific predictions, overall model behavior, relevant input features, learned rules, training-data influence, and future system actions. Techniques include interpretable models, feature-importance methods, SHAP, LIME, partial-dependence plots, saliency maps, counterfactuals, causal tracing, attention analysis, and mechanistic interpretability. XAI is especially important in high-stakes areas such as medicine, finance, law, defense, and criminal justice, where explanations support auditing, bias detection, regulatory compliance, human decision-making, and trust.
