Git is a distributed version control system designed to manage and track changes to source code or other data. Originally created by Linus Torvalds for Linux kernel development, Git emphasizes speed, data integrity, and support for large-scale, non-linear workflows involving many branches and contributors. Unlike centralized client-server systems, Git gives every developer a complete local copy of the repository, including its history. This allows users to create commits, inspect history, branch, merge, and work offline without depending on a central server. Repositories can later synchronize changes with one another through remote protocols, while a central hosting service is often used to maintain an integrated shared copy. Because all repositories with the same history are peers, Git supports flexible collaboration and distributed development.
