Social psychology is the systematic, empirical study of how people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others. It focuses primarily on the individual within social contexts, examining how mental states interact with social situations and how these interactions shape behavior, attitudes, identity, relationships, and group participation. Compared with sociology, social psychology generally places greater emphasis on individual-level processes and relies more heavily on experimental, laboratory, quantitative, qualitative, and computational methods. The scope of social psychology includes social cognition, attribution, attitudes, persuasion, social influence, conformity, compliance, obedience, group dynamics, interpersonal attraction, self-concept, prejudice, and intergroup behavior. It investigates both basic psychological processes and their practical applications in areas such as health, education, law, workplaces, and public responses to crises. Contemporary social psychology also considers ethical standards, cultural and multicultural perspectives, social isolation, misinformation, mental health, and social cohesion.
