5G is the fifth generation of cellular network technology and the successor to 4G. In commercial use, β5Gβ typically refers to mobile networks built around the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 5G system and its New Radio (NR) air interface, first specified in 3GPP Release 15. It was developed to meet the ITUβs IMT-2020 framework and is designed for higher performance and new capabilities such as network slicing and ultra-reliable low-latency services. Compared with 4G, 5G is designed to deliver higher data rates, greater capacity, lower latency, and more flexible network management, while also supporting dense deployments of devices. 5G networks can be deployed in non-standalone mode (using existing LTE/4G core infrastructure) or standalone mode with a dedicated 5G Core. 5G is deployed alongside 4G and is expected to coexist with it for many years, with different frequency bands (low, mid, and high/mmWave) used to balance coverage and speed.
