Synthetic biology is an interdisciplinary field that applies engineering principles to biology. It combines biology, engineering, genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology, systems biology, computer science, and related disciplines to design, construct, and redesign biological parts, devices, circuits, cells, organisms, and systems. Unlike conventional genetic engineering, which often modifies an organism by introducing a single gene, synthetic biology seeks to assemble standardized biological components or create redesigned systems with predictable and controllable functions. The main goal of synthetic biology is to develop biological systems with useful capabilities that do not occur naturally or to improve existing biological functions. Applications include producing medicines, fuels, food, materials, and energy; processing information; diagnosing and treating disease; improving agriculture and manufacturing; and expanding fundamental knowledge about life. Broader approaches include engineering metabolic pathways, constructing synthetic or minimal genomes, creating artificial cells, developing organisms with alternative genetic systems, and using computer models to design biological systems. The field also aims to make biology more predictable, robust, and controllable while addressing associated safety, ethical, legal, and environmental concerns.
