The Industrial Revolution was a major transitional period from approximately 1760 to 1840 in which economies shifted from agrarian, hand-based production to mechanized, factory-based manufacturing. It began in Great Britain and spread to continental Europe and the United States by about 1840. The transformation involved the adoption of machines, new methods of iron and chemical production, expanded use of water and steam power, improved machine tools, and the development of the mechanized factory system. The revolution began most rapidly in textiles, especially cotton spinning and weaving, but its scope extended to iron production, transportation, communications, agriculture, finance, and social organization. It produced substantial increases in output and productivity, contributed to population growth and urbanization, and helped create sustained economic growth and improved living standards for many people, although historians debate the timing and extent of these improvements. The period's innovations also established the foundations for the later Second Industrial Revolution, which accelerated after 1870 through steel production, electricity, mass production, and advanced machinery.
