Greek Mythology: Origins, Sources, and Gods

Definition and Scope of Greek Mythology

Greek mythology is the body of myths originating in ancient Greece and a major part of ancient Greek folklore. Its stories explain the origins and structure of the world, the genealogies and activities of gods, the deeds of heroes, and the meaning of religious cults and rituals. Although originally transmitted through oral-poetic traditions, these myths were later preserved in epic poetry, hymns, lyric works, drama, historical and philosophical writings, and visual art. Greek mythology is now commonly studied alongside Roman mythology as part of classical mythology.
