Generative art is art created wholly or partly through an autonomous system that independently determines features of the final work. The system may be a computer algorithm, machine, biological or chemical process, robotic mechanism, mathematical procedure, data-mapping method, or another rule-based process. The artist typically defines the system, rules, parameters, or concept, while allowing the system to make some decisions and produce outcomes that may be dynamic, unpredictable, unique, or endlessly variable. Generative art is often associated with algorithmic and computer-generated art, but it is broader than digital media. Its defining qualities are process, transformation, and a degree of autonomy: the artwork emerges from the operation of a system rather than being directly composed in every detail by the artist. The term has also been applied to music, literature, architecture, visual art, software, robotics, and blockchain-based works, including generative NFTs.
