Algebra is a generalization of arithmetic that studies quantities, relationships, and operations using both numbers and variables. While arithmetic focuses on specific numerical calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponentiation, roots, and logarithms, elementary algebra introduces symbols for unknown or unspecified values. This allows mathematical statements to express general rules, such as the commutative property a Γ b = b Γ a, rather than relationships involving only particular numbers. Elementary algebra uses expressions, equations, inequalities, and systematic transformations to determine when statements are true. Techniques such as simplification, substitution, factoring, and balancing both sides of an equation extend arithmetic reasoning to unknown quantities. Algebra later develops into linear algebra, which studies systems of linear equations, and abstract algebra, which examines general structures such as groups, rings, and fields that may involve objects and operations beyond ordinary numbers.
