The Roman Empire originated from the expansion of the Roman Republic, which began extending beyond the Italian Peninsula in the 3rd century BC. By the 1st century BC, Rome controlled much of the Mediterranean, but political rivalries and civil wars destabilized the Republic. Octavian’s victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, followed by the conquest of Egypt, enabled him to establish the Principate. In 27 BC, the Senate granted Octavian the title Augustus and extensive military authority, making him the first Roman emperor while preserving the appearance of republican government. Under the emperors, Rome achieved its greatest territorial dominance. During the Pax Romana, the empire consolidated control over Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, reaching its maximum extent under Trajan around AD 117 at approximately 5 million square kilometers. Its frontiers included Hadrian’s Wall in Britain, the Rhine-Danube frontier in Europe, and territories extending toward the Euphrates in the east. Later emperors increasingly emphasized defending and administering existing borders rather than expanding them. Internal conflicts, invasions, economic problems, and political instability weakened the empire, leading to the division of imperial authority between East and West. The Western Roman Empire collapsed in AD 476, while the Eastern Roman Empire survived until Constantinople fell in 1453.
