The Enlightenment is generally dated from the late 17th century into the 18th century, emerging in Western Europe and reaching its peak as its ideas spread more widely across Europe and into European colonies. One traditional European-historians framework dates its beginning to the death of Louis XIV in 1715 and its end to the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789. Other historians instead place the end of the Enlightenment in the early 19th century, with some proposing as late as 1804 (the death of Immanuel Kant).
