Agile software development is an umbrella term for a family of approaches to developing software that reflect the values and principles from the Agile Alliance’s 2001 Manifesto for Agile Software Development. It emphasizes valuing individuals and interactions, working software, customer collaboration, and responding to change rather than strictly following a plan. Many specific practices (often called “Agile” with a capital A) grew from this mindset, including iterative requirements discovery and continuous improvement through collaboration with self-organizing, cross-functional teams and their customers or end users. The term “agile” also covers a broader philosophy of iterative, incremental, and evolutionary development. Agile methods typically deliver in short timeboxes (iterations/sprints), demonstrate working software frequently, and use frequent feedback loops to adapt quickly. Agile development sits on the “adaptive” side of a continuum compared with more “predictive” (plan-driven) approaches, aiming to reduce the risk of investing heavily in uncertain early plans by evolving requirements and design as evidence and understanding improve.
