Alphabet Inc. is an American multinational technology conglomerate that was created in 2015 as a restructuring of Google, and it became the parent holding company for Google and many of Google’s former subsidiaries. The reorganization moved a range of businesses into Alphabet so that Google would be more focused on its core internet products, while other, less directly related ventures could operate with greater autonomy under the Alphabet umbrella. As the parent company, Alphabet retains Google as the main operating company for internet-related products and services such as Android, YouTube, and Google Search. Alphabet is publicly traded on Nasdaq under two share classes (GOOGL and GOOG) and continues Google’s stock price history. Leadership is split such that Sundar Pichai serves as CEO of both Alphabet and Google, while founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin stepped down from executive roles in 2019 but remain employees, board members, and controlling shareholders of Alphabet.

Alphabet Inc. was created on October 2, 2015 through a restructuring of Google into a public holding company.
