The Apollo program (1961–1972) was NASA’s crewed lunar exploration effort that achieved the first human Moon landing in 1969. It was conceived as a successor to Project Mercury, accelerated under President John F. Kennedy’s national goal to land a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth, and was executed using the Saturn rocket family and two main crewed spacecraft: the Apollo Command and Service Module (CSM) and the Apollo Lunar Module (LM). The program’s key milestones included Apollo 7 as the first crewed flight, Apollo 11 as the first crewed landing on the Moon, and Apollo 17 as the final mission in 1972.
