The Apollo program (1961–1972), led by NASA, was the United States’ human spaceflight effort to land the first humans on the Moon. It was conceived as a follow-up to Project Mercury, accelerated under President John F. Kennedy’s national goal to land a man on the Moon and return him safely by the end of the decade, and was executed using the Saturn rocket family. The program’s first crewed flight was Apollo 7 (1968), and its first lunar landing was Apollo 11 (1969), followed by five additional lunar landing missions, with Apollo 17 in December 1972. Apollo’s outcomes included major milestones and lasting contributions to science, engineering, and NASA’s future capability. Across the program, 32 missions succeeded, with failures including Apollo 1 (a fatal cabin fire during testing) and Apollo 13 (an in-flight oxygen tank explosion that forced an aborted landing but enabled a safe return). The program returned 842 pounds (382 kg) of lunar rocks and samples, advancing understanding of the Moon’s composition and history, and it helped establish core human spaceflight infrastructure such as Johnson Space Center and Kennedy Space Center. Apollo also drove technological progress in areas like avionics, telecommunications, and computers, and it laid the groundwork for later lunar efforts such as Artemis.
