Atoms are the basic building blocks of chemical elements and the fundamental units of matter. An atom consists of a compact nucleus made of protons (and generally neutrons) surrounded by an electron cloud of electrons held in place by electromagnetic attraction. The identity of an element is determined by the number of protons in its atoms (atomic number). Atoms can differ in the number of neutrons while keeping the same number of protons, producing isotopes of the same element. Atoms play a central role in determining the properties and behavior of matter. Most of an atom’s mass resides in its nucleus, while electrons largely control how atoms interact and form chemical bonds. When atoms gain or lose electrons they become ions, and when electrons rearrange or atoms bond together they drive physical and chemical changes. Atomic behavior is governed by quantum effects, meaning electrons occupy specific energy levels and are responsible for the characteristic spectra of each element.
