Augmented reality (AR), also closely associated with mixed reality (MR), is a form of 3D human–computer interaction that overlays real-time, computer-rendered graphics onto the user’s view of the physical world. The result is an experience that is seamlessly integrated with the real environment, changing how users perceive what is around them. Unlike virtual reality, which replaces the real world with a fully simulated one, AR adds virtual information on top of what the user can already see. AR is typically visual, but it can involve multiple senses such as audio and haptics. A common core definition describes AR systems as combining (1) real and virtual elements, (2) real-time interaction, and (3) accurate 3D registration so virtual objects align correctly with real-world positions. Depending on the design, the overlaid information can be additive (constructive) or can obscure parts of the natural environment (destructive).
