Definition and core idea of augmented reality

Augmented reality (AR), also closely associated with the term mixed reality (MR), is a form of 3D human–computer interaction that overlays real-time, computer-rendered graphics onto the user’s view of the real world through a display such as a handheld device or a head-mounted display. The result is an experience that is seamlessly interwoven with the physical environment, changing how the user perceives what is around them. Unlike virtual reality, which replaces the real environment with a fully simulated one, AR adds virtual information on top of what the user already sees. AR is typically visual, but it can involve multiple senses, including audio and haptic (touch-related) feedback. A core definition of AR emphasizes three features: (1) combining real and virtual worlds, (2) enabling real-time interaction, and (3) accurately registering (aligning) virtual objects with real-world space. The added information can be constructive (enhancing or adding to the natural scene) or destructive (masking parts of the natural environment).
