Astrobiology is an interdisciplinary science that investigates the origin, distribution, evolution, and future of life throughout the universe. It combines astronomy, astrochemistry, Earth sciences, planetary science, biology, environmental science, and paleobiology. Its scope includes studying how life arose on Earth, identifying environments that could support life elsewhere, searching for extraterrestrial organisms and biosignatures, and considering the long-term survival and future development of life. Although it is closely related to exobiology, astrobiology has a broader focus that includes terrestrial life and the conditions that make life possible. The field addresses major scientific questions such as how nonliving matter became life, whether life exists beyond Earth, what forms extraterrestrial life might take, and how life can survive in extreme environments. Researchers study Earth's extremophiles, early atmosphere and oceans, prebiotic chemistry, hydrothermal vents, impact events, and microbial fossils to understand life's origins and limits. They also examine Mars, icy moons such as Europa and Enceladus, Titan, Venus, and potentially habitable exoplanets using spacecraft, rovers, telescopes, remote sensing, and laboratory analysis. As of 2024, no extraterrestrial life has been confirmed, so detecting reliable biosignatures remains a central goal.
