Myth is a genre of traditional narrative that plays a fundamental role in a society. In scholarly usage, the truth or falsity of a story does not determine whether it is a myth. Myths are often associated with religious or cultural authority and may include gods, demigods, supernatural beings, humans, animals, or combinations of these figures. They commonly take place in a remote or primordial past and explain the origins of the world, natural phenomena, social customs, institutions, values, rituals, and cultural norms. The nature of myth is functional, symbolic, sacred, and culturally meaningful. Myths provide models for behavior, affirm religious beliefs, establish social order, and connect communities with a sacred or exemplary past, often through ritual reenactment. They are distinguished from legends and folktales mainly by their sacred or supernatural character, although boundaries between these genres can shift as stories move across cultures or as beliefs change. In academic contexts, myth is therefore understood not simply as a false story, but as a traditional narrative through which societies interpret existence and express collective values.
