Biodiversity is the variability of life on Earth. Biologists commonly define it as the totality of genes, species, and ecosystems of a region, and it can be understood through multiple levels of biological variety. These levels include genetic variability (differences in genes and molecules), species diversity (variety and relative abundance of species), ecosystem diversity (variety of habitats and ecological systems), and phylogenetic diversity (how evolutionary lineages are represented). Biodiversity is also linked to functional diversity, which reflects how many functionally different species exist within a population (e.g., differences in feeding, movement, and predator–prey roles).
