A bridge is a structure designed to span an obstacle such as a river or railway, enabling people, vehicles, and other loads to cross. Most bridges use a flat deck supported by beams, arches, or cables, and they are built on foundations engineered to transfer the bridge’s weight safely into the ground without excessive settlement. The purpose of a bridge is to traverse an obstacle while providing safe, functional passage and adequate clearances. Bridges support and transport many kinds of traffic and infrastructure, including railways, cars, pedestrians, pipelines, and cables. They may also serve specialized roles such as aqueducts for carrying water, canal bridges for navigation, grade separation to improve safety and traffic flow at intersections, and military or temporary crossing needs.
