Linux is a family of free and open-source, Unix-like operating systems built around the Linux kernel, first released by Linus Torvalds on September 17, 1991. The kernel is monolithic and licensed under GPLv2, while complete Linux-based systems combine it with system libraries, utilities, shells, package managers, bootloaders, display servers, desktop environments, and applications. These complete systems are commonly distributed as Linux distributions, including Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, Arch Linux, Linux Mint, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise, and ChromeOS. Android also uses the Linux kernel but is not generally classified as a Linux distribution.
