A chatbot (originally “chatterbot”) is a software application or web interface designed to converse with users through text or speech, acting as a conversation partner. Its purpose is to simulate human-like dialogue by interpreting user inputs and generating appropriate responses, ranging from simple scripted interactions to more advanced systems that can generate natural language. Chatbots have been used for decades, with early examples such as ELIZA (1966), which created an illusion of understanding by matching clue words and returning pre-prepared responses. Modern chatbots—especially those built on large language models like GPT—are trained on large text corpora and can produce fluent, context-aware text, making them useful for tasks such as information delivery, assistance, and automated interaction. A major long-standing application of chatbots is customer service and support, including virtual assistants on messaging platforms and company websites. They are also used internally by organizations (e.g., for support desks and HR) and in specialized domains such as healthcare, politics, and even educational or entertainment products. However, their purpose must be balanced with concerns such as misuse, data security, and limitations in reliability and bias.
