Historically, chatbots were evaluated against ideas such as the Turing test, which considers whether a program can convincingly imitate a human in real-time conversation. Early systems like ELIZA demonstrated that seemingly meaningful dialogue could be produced using pattern matching and pre-prepared responses, creating an “illusion of understanding.” Modern chatbots increasingly rely on large language models (e.g., transformer-based generative models) that can generate text after training on large datasets, supporting more flexible and capable conversational behavior.
