Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline concerned with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment. Its scope includes public infrastructure such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, railways, pipelines, buildings, water-supply systems, and sewage networks. It applies principles from mathematics, physics, materials science, geology, hydrology, environmental science, and project management to address societyโs infrastructure needs. Civil engineering is traditionally distinguished from military engineering and is practiced in both public organizations and private firms. The field includes numerous specialized areas, including structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental, construction, coastal, water resources, municipal, surveying, materials, earthquake, and forensic engineering. Civil engineers work throughout the infrastructure life cycle, from planning and design through construction, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. The profession developed from ancient construction and water-management practices and became formally established in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a distinct civilian engineering discipline.
