Etymology and naming origins

The term “comet” has a long linguistic history. It appears in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and is mentioned by the Venerable Bede in 729 CE. The modern word comes from Old English “cometa,” which was borrowed from Latin “comēta/comētēs.” Latin itself traces back to Greek “komētēs,” meaning “wearing long hair,” reflecting an older idea of comets as “long-haired” objects in the sky.
