Consumer behavior is the interdisciplinary study of how individuals, groups, and organizations select, purchase, use, experience, and dispose of goods and services. It includes the emotional, cognitive, and observable behavioral responses that occur before, during, and after consumption. The term consumer may refer to the end user rather than only the person who makes the purchase, and consumer behavior applies to both individual and organizational markets. The scope of consumer behavior extends beyond the act of buying. It examines purchase activities such as information search, product evaluation, payment, and decision-making; use activities including who consumes a product, when and where it is used, and the meanings attached to consumption; and disposal activities such as discarding, recycling, reselling, or transferring products. The field also investigates how personal characteristics, lifestyles, emotions, attitudes, preferences, social groups, culture, economic conditions, marketing stimuli, and environmental cues influence consumption patterns, loyalty, repurchase intentions, referrals, and brand advocacy. As an applied social science, it combines marketing with psychology, sociology, anthropology, ethnography, economics, consumer neuroscience, and data analytics.
