Definition and public health purpose of epidemiology

Epidemiology is the study and analysis of the distribution (who, when, and where) and patterns of health and disease in a defined population, including the determinants of those conditions. It applies this knowledge to prevent disease by identifying risk factors and targeting preventive healthcare. As a cornerstone of public health, epidemiology supports evidence-based practice and policy decisions by linking observed health patterns to actionable prevention strategies. Public health purpose of epidemiology is to prevent disease through systematic investigation: epidemiologists help design studies, collect and analyze data, interpret findings, and disseminate results (often through peer review and sometimes systematic reviews).
