Robotics is the interdisciplinary study and practice focused on the design, construction, operation, and use of robots. A robotics specialist (a roboticist) works across hardware and software to build machines that can perform tasks in real environments. In typical robot design, four core aspects are combined: a power source (such as a battery or wired electricity), mechanical construction (the physical structure and actuators), a control system (electrical circuits that coordinate motion and read sensors), and software (programs that decide what the robot should do, using remote control, AI, or both). The scope of robotics extends to creating robots that assist humans across many domains, including agriculture, construction, domestic work, food processing, inventory and manufacturing, medicine, military, mining, space exploration, and transportation. Robotics also addresses how robots interact with people and environments, including the displacement of workers and related societal concerns. Research and development within the field covers topics such as robot kinematics and autonomy, and broader areas like human–robot interaction, swarm robotics, and quantum robotics.
