Stoichiometry is the study of the quantitative relationships between reactants and products in chemical reactions, based on the law of conservation of mass. Because atoms are neither created nor destroyed, a balanced chemical equation provides a ratio (using positive integer stoichiometric coefficients) that links how much of each substance is consumed and produced. With these ratios, if the amount of one reactant (or product) is known, the amounts of the others can be calculated. The purpose of stoichiometry is to enable practical calculations for reaction planning and analysis. This includes converting between grams and moles using molar mass, determining the amount of product formed from given reactant quantities, and identifying the stoichiometric (optimal) amounts where reagents are consumed with no deficiency or excess. Stoichiometry is also used to find the limiting reagent (which controls the maximum product formed) and to compute percent yield by comparing actual yield to theoretical yield.
