Cultural anthropology is the branch of anthropology that studies cultural variation among human societies. It examines how people develop, organize, interpret, and transmit beliefs, values, customs, technologies, institutions, languages, and everyday practices. A central concern is how culture enables humans to adapt to their environments through learned, non-genetic means. The field balances attention to particular cultures with broader questions about human similarities, global connections, and the relationship between local experiences and universal aspects of human life. The scope of cultural anthropology is broad and includes ethnographic fieldwork, participant observation, interviews, surveys, cross-cultural comparison, and interpretive analysis. Anthropologists study areas such as kinship, religion, economics, politics, gender, health, education, migration, globalization, technology, indigenous rights, virtual communities, institutions, and industrialized societies. Modern cultural anthropology emphasizes cultural relativism, historical context, power relations, colonialism, and the meanings people give to their own social worlds, while also applying anthropological knowledge in governments, businesses, healthcare, prisons, schools, and nonprofit organizations.
