Geomorphology is the scientific study of the origin, evolution, form, and dynamics of landforms and bathymetric features at or near Earth's surface. It explains why landscapes look the way they do, reconstructs their histories, analyzes the processes that shape them, and predicts future changes. The field combines field observation, laboratory experimentation, remote sensing, geochemical analysis, terrain measurement, geochronology, and numerical modeling. The discipline examines the interaction of surface processes—including weathering, erosion, water flow, wind, ice, waves, chemical reactions, biological activity, mass movement, and human modification—with geological processes such as tectonic uplift, subsidence, volcanism, and isostatic adjustment. Its scope ranges from detailed studies of soils, hillslopes, rivers, glaciers, coasts, and sediment transport to broad investigations of climate–tectonic feedbacks and planetary landforms. Geomorphology overlaps with physical geography, geology, hydrology, climatology, ecology, engineering, archaeology, sedimentology, and soil science, and has practical applications in hazard assessment, river restoration, coastal protection, and landscape management.
