Dehydration is a deficit of total body water that disrupts normal metabolic processes. It occurs when free-water loss exceeds intake, commonly due to excessive sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, inadequate water consumption, or certain medications and health conditions. As dehydration worsens, symptoms typically become more severe and may include significant thirst and neurological changes. Common signs and symptoms include increased thirst, tiredness, decreased urine output, dizziness, headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, and confusion. In more severe cases, dehydration can cause sunken eyes, poor skin turgor, orthostatic hypotension, seizures, and even coma. Older adults may experience dehydration differently, with fatigue being a common symptom and a reduced thirst response contributing to risk.
