Aerospace engineering is the primary engineering field concerned with developing aircraft and spacecraft. Its scope includes vehicles operating within Earthโs atmosphere and in outer space, and it integrates aerodynamics, propulsion, avionics, materials science, structural analysis, manufacturing, control systems, software, and flight testing. Because aerospace vehicles face demanding conditions such as changing pressure and temperature, high speeds, structural loads, and radiation, their development requires coordinated work among specialists from multiple engineering disciplines. The field has two major, overlapping branches: aeronautical engineering, which focuses on aircraft and atmospheric flight, and astronautical engineering, which focuses on spacecraft and space operations. Avionics engineering is a closely related specialization concerned with onboard electronics, communication, navigation, computers, and control systems. Aerospace engineering also covers the complete life cycle of vehicles, from design and testing to operation, reliability, maintenance, and integration of subsystems such as power, thermal control, communications, and life support.
