An ice age is a prolonged period of reduced temperatures at Earth’s surface and in its atmosphere, during which continental glaciers, alpine glaciers, and polar ice caps expand or persist. The term can describe very long-lasting icehouse periods or shorter intervals of cooling within them. Ice ages contain colder phases called glacials and warmer phases called interglacials. Earth is currently in an icehouse period known as the Late Cenozoic Ice Age, which began about 34 million years ago. Within it, the Quaternary Ice Age began approximately 2.58 million years ago and includes repeated advances and retreats of ice sheets. The current warm interglacial, the Holocene, began about 11,700 years ago after the Last Glacial Period.
