An ecological niche describes how a species fits into its environment—how it responds to the distribution of resources, competitors, predators, parasites, and pathogens, and how it in turn affects those factors. The scope of “niche” varies by definition: the Grinnellian niche focuses on habitat requirements and behavioral adaptations (often using abiotic variables like climate and terrain), the Eltonian niche emphasizes a species’ role in the biotic environment (its food/enemy relationships and effects on other organisms, including consumer–resource dynamics), and the Hutchinsonian niche represents an n-dimensional “hypervolume” of environmental conditions and resources needed for persistence. Contemporary niche theory integrates these views using consumer–resource models. It distinguishes an “impact niche” (effects of a consumer on resources and other consumers, aligning with Eltonian ideas) from a “requirement niche” (the realized conditions where the species can survive and reproduce, bounded by resource availability and interactions such as competition and predation). Coexistence under this framework typically requires overlapping requirement niches and reciprocal competitive advantages tied to limiting resources, though real-world exceptions exist where species coexist without clear niche differentiation. Finally, niche concepts connect to geography: a species’ fundamental geographic range reflects where conditions are favorable in principle, while the realized geographic range is the subset actually occupied after biotic interactions and dispersal barriers. Niche parameters correspond to the dimensions of the niche (biotic and abiotic variables such as life history, trophic position, habitat, and geographic range), and specialists versus generalists differ in how narrowly or broadly they occupy these niche dimensions.
