Energy is defined as a quantitative property of a body or physical system that can be transferred to it and recognized by its capacity to do work and by its manifestation as heat and light. In this view, energy is not tied to a single form; it can appear in multiple forms such as kinetic energy, potential energy, chemical energy, radiant energy, internal energy, and rest energy. Energy is also a conserved quantity: it can change form or be converted between forms, but it cannot be created or destroyed. The law of conservation of energy states that in any process energy may be transferred between a system and its surroundings (for example, as work or heat), while the total energy of the system plus surroundings remains constant.
