Facial recognition system definition and purpose

A facial recognition system is a biometric technology that can match a human face found in a digital image or video frame against a database of faces. It works by detecting and measuring facial features (such as the eyes, nose, and mouth) from the input image, converting them into a representation, and then comparing that representation to stored records. The purpose of facial recognition is primarily identification and authentication—verifying a person’s identity for services such as ID verification and access control. Beyond authentication, it is also used for tasks like surveillance, law enforcement support, passenger screening, and indexing or searching images, where the system helps determine whether a face in new footage matches someone in a known database.
