Socialism is an economic ideology and political philosophy that centers on social ownership of the means of production, contrasting with private ownership. It includes a range of economic, political, and social theories and movements aimed at implementing systems where production and key resources are collectively controlled. Social ownership can take different forms, such as public, community, collective, cooperative, or employee ownership. The core idea of socialism is that society should organize economic life in ways that reduce or eliminate the problems associated with capitalism—especially those tied to profit and capital accumulation. Socialist systems can be non-market (seeking to avoid market-related inefficiencies and crises) or market-based (often retaining monetary prices and factor markets, and sometimes profit motives). Over time, socialism has also developed into multiple political currents, including revolutionary and reformist approaches, and it has influenced governance through socialist parties and international political movements.
