Photography is the art, application, and practice of creating images by recording light—either electronically using an image sensor or chemically using a light-sensitive material such as photographic film. A camera typically focuses light from objects onto a light-sensitive surface during a timed exposure, producing either an electrical signal (for digital images) or a latent chemical image that is later developed into a visible photograph. Its purpose extends far beyond art: photography is used across many fields of science, manufacturing (for example, photolithography), and business, as well as for film and video production, recreation and hobbies, and mass communication. The resulting image is called a photograph, and the person who operates the camera is a photographer.
