A wave can be defined as a propagating dynamic disturbance: a time-dependent change from equilibrium in one or more quantities (such as pressure, temperature, displacement, or field strength) that moves through space. Periodic waves oscillate about an equilibrium value, and when the disturbance travels in one direction it is called a traveling wave. If two identical periodic waves travel in opposite directions and superpose, they form a standing wave with fixed nodes (positions of zero or minimal amplitude).
