Rhetoric is the art of persuasion and a core discipline of the humanities, traditionally grouped with grammar and logic/dialectic as part of the trivium. It studies how speakers and writers use techniques to inform, persuade, and motivate audiences, and it also offers tools for discovering and developing arguments appropriate to particular situations. Aristotle defined rhetoric as the ability to observe the available means of persuasion in any given case, and he described three main appeals to audiences: logos (reasoning), pathos (emotion), and ethos (credibility/character).
