Etymology and pronunciation

In chemical analysis, chromatography is pronounced /ˌkroʊməˈtɒɡrəfi/. The word is derived from Greek: χρῶμα (chrōma), meaning "color," and γράφειν (gráphein), meaning "to write." Together, the term reflects the original use of the technique to separate and visualize colored biological pigments, which directly inspired the name. The technique was developed by botanist Mikhail Tsvet (1901–1905), who coined the term chromatography in the early 20th century. Because his method separated plant pigments into bands of different colors (such as green, orange, and yellow), the etymology tied closely to what the process produced visually. Later advances expanded chromatography into many other separation methods, but the name remained rooted in its pigment-separation origins.
