Cell signaling is the biological process by which a cell communicates with itself, other cells, and the environment. It is essential for all forms of life and typically involves three core components: a first messenger (ligand), a receptor, and the resulting signal-driven cellular response. Signals can be chemical (most commonly) or physical cues such as pressure, voltage, temperature, or light. The purpose of cell signaling is to coordinate specific cellular behaviors that support development, tissue repair, immunity, and homeostasis. Cells respond to particular extracellular signals through receptors that detect ligands or physical stimuli, triggering signal transduction pathways inside the cell. These pathways often activate ion channels or initiate second-messenger cascades that amplify and modulate the original signal, ultimately leading to physiological and gene-expression changes. Errors in signaling interactions can contribute to diseases such as cancer, autoimmunity, and diabetes.
