Memory is the faculty of the mind that encodes, stores, and retrieves information over time to influence future action. Without the ability to remember past events, essential capacities such as language development, relationships, and personal identity would not be possible. Memory is often described as an information-processing system with explicit and implicit components, involving a sensory processor, short-term (including working) memory, and long-term memory. Functionally, sensory memory briefly holds information from the senses (typically less than a second) as an automatic, out-of-cognitive-control response. Short-term memory supports recall for seconds to about a minute with limited capacity, and it can be improved through strategies such as chunking. Working memory acts as an encoding and retrieval system that maintains information actively, while long-term memory stores much larger amounts of information for much longer periods and is supported by more stable neural changes. Long-term memory is commonly divided into declarative (conscious, explicit) memory—such as semantic and episodic memory—and non-declarative (implicit) memory, including procedural learning and priming. Memory also depends on consolidation: the process that transitions information from short-term to long-term storage. The hippocampus is important for learning new information and for consolidation, while long-term memory relies on distributed, more permanent neural and molecular changes across the brain. Because memory is not perfect, encoding, storage, and retrieval can be disrupted by factors such as limited attention, brain damage (e.g., to memory-related regions like the hippocampus), and decay or interference over time.
